About Raven
Some people fall into the mortuary profession by accident — I fell hard and never left.
Embalmer, educator, and keeper of the quiet craft.
Kiera Rae is an embalmer, educator, and the founder of Raven Mortuary Training.
Her career in the mortuary profession began unexpectedly during a work experience placement — after twenty years as a hairdresser. What was meant to be a short introduction to the industry quickly became a vocation, and the mortuary decided to keep her.
Since then, Kiera has worked across all aspects of mortuary care, progressing to Mortuary Manager and undertaking extensive study in anatomy, infection control, Training & Assessment, and post-mortem reconstruction.
She founded Raven Mortuary Training in 2012 to offer a more thoughtful and bespoke approach to embalming, education, and professional support for funeral homes.
After several years working as a trade embalmer, Kiera later became Technical Trainer for Dodge Australia (now MazWell), where she developed and delivered embalming workshops across Australia.
She eventually returned to Raven to work independently so she could continue assisting funeral homes and embalmers who required experienced support and mentorship.
Kiera is a practising member of the Australian Institute of Embalmers, the British Institute of Embalmers, and the New Zealand Embalmers Association.
She is also the creator of Coffee, Cadavers & CPD™️ — a professional gathering for Western Australian funeral practitioners who value continuing education, professional community, and the occasional dark joke over coffee.
Outside of her professional endeavours, Kiera finds happiness in literature on poisons, viruses, plagues, and enjoys a spot of gardening, drink her tea at your own peril.
